The StageShare Score: the measurement standard for the speaking channel

What counts as a stage

Stage: a recurring place where experts speak to a professional audience within a domain of public discussion. Two types: events and podcasts.Stage set: the collection of stages that carry the discussion in a domain over 12 months. Per domain: 15 to 25 events plus 10 to 15 podcasts. Selection criteria: reach within the domain, presence of decision makers, recurring frequency.Speaking moment: one appearance by one expert on one stage. A keynote counts as a speaking moment. A podcast episode as a guest counts as a speaking moment. A panel spot counts as half a speaking moment, for both stage types.

The stage set

The stage set consists of 15 to 25 events (conferences, seminars and panels that set the agenda on substance, attract decision makers and publish their speakers) plus 10 to 15 podcasts. Podcast selection criteria: the domain is the main subject, at least 10 episodes in the past 12 months, and guests are predominantly domain experts or decision makers. Exhibition floors and internal events do not count.

The count

For each event we count all speaking moments: keynotes and breakouts count in full, a panel spot counts as half. Speakers are linked to the organisation they represented at the time of speaking. Duplicates (the same speaker, the same event) count once. Source: public programme and speaker data. Podcast data comes from public RSS feeds, episode titles and show notes. For each podcast we build the guest list over 12 months, link guests to organisations and count the speaking moments. The same counting rules apply as for events.

The measurement window

12 months back from the reference date. Every report states the reference date and the composition of the stage set.

What the score says

A score of 5% in a stage set of 300 speaking moments means 15 speaking moments. The score is a market share figure for the spoken discussion. It says nothing about the quality of the talks; the Speaking ROI Audit covers that.
